About the role
As Senior Counsel, Regulatory Legal – Latin America, you will be the legal voice on how Nu's payments and digital-assets products can operate, launch and scale across the region. You will define where licenses, registrations or regulated entities are required, and turn that analysis into a clear recommendation the business can act on.
This is a legal and regulatory strategy role, not a compliance operations role. You will work with Product, Compliance, Public Policy, Risk, Treasury and business leaders on new products and new markets, in an environment where regulation is moving faster than the product. You will own the regulatory path for what we build next, and you will be expected to say "here is the path I recommend", not just "here are the risks".
You'll be responsible for
Advising on regulatory legal strategy for payments, money movement, wallets, stored value, digital assets, stablecoins and related products across Latin America.
Building and maintaining a country-by-country view of the regulatory perimeter: which activities require licenses, registrations, approvals or local regulated entities.
Leading the legal analysis for entry into new markets and for the launch of new products, features and business models.
Working with Product and business teams to structure products in line with applicable law, and proposing alternative structures when the initial model hits a regulatory obstacle.
Coordinating license and registration applications (payments, financial services, virtual assets) and supporting engagement with regulators, central banks and other authorities, including on novel issues.
Managing local external counsel while remaining accountable for synthesizing their input into a practical recommendation.
Creating scalable frameworks, playbooks and decision trees so recurring questions are answered consistently across markets.
Monitoring regulatory developments and separating what materially affects our strategy from general noise, and anticipating where regulation is heading on stablecoins, tokenized money, crypto-assets and new payment infrastructure.
Briefing senior legal and business leaders on complex regulatory topics in clear, concise and commercially useful terms.
Acting as a generalist legal business partner for new businesses in Latin America, coordinating a holistic legal approach, including support on agreements related to our products.
We are looking for someone who has
Qualified as a lawyer, holding the local bar license in the country where you will be based.
In-house experience at a fintech, payments, crypto/digital-assets or banking company, where you personally worked through regulatory, licensing and market-entry questions in Latin America.
Hands-on experience with payments regulation and licensing, and with digital assets, crypto, stablecoins or blockchain-based financial products.
Experience analyzing and comparing regulatory regimes across several Latin American jurisdictions, not a single-country specialty, with familiarity with the South American regulatory landscape.
A solid understanding of how payments, banking, securities, FX and digital-asset regulation interact.
Experience taking part in obtaining or maintaining financial-services, payments or digital-asset licenses or registrations.
Experience breaking down complex product architectures and money flows to pinpoint the core regulatory question, and the judgment built along the way to know when to escalate, bring in external counsel or engage a regulator, and when the business can simply move forward.
A track record of briefing senior legal and business leaders on technical regulatory topics, turning them into clear, actionable recommendations.
Experience as a senior, autonomous legal partner to Product and business teams in fast-moving environments, owning ambiguous problems and finding a compliant path forward instead of only flagging risks.
Fluent English and Spanish.
Nice to have
Direct work with financial regulators or central banks, or prior experience at a financial-regulatory law firm, central bank or regulator.
Experience in regulatory policy for digital assets and payments.
Banking or credit regulatory background combined with curiosity about digital assets.
Familiarity with additional Latin American markets.
