Design, build, and operate scalable cloud-native backend services and cloud infrastructure using Java and AWS.
Job Description
We are looking for a hands-on Senior Software Engineer with strong DevOps and cloud platform expertise to design, build, deploy, and operate scalable cloud-native services and the engineering infrastructure that supports them. You will work primarily with Java, Spring Boot, AWS, PostgreSQL, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code, taking ownership of solutions from development through production operations.
You will partner with Product, Architecture, Security, DevOps and engineering teams to improve platform reliability, deployment velocity, operational maturity and developer experience. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys both building production software and improving how that software is delivered and operated at scale.
This role is based in Toronto and follows a hybrid working model with three days onsite per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, test and support scalable backend services, REST APIs and microservices using Java, Spring Boot, AWS and PostgreSQL, with a focus on reliability, performance and maintainability.
- Own and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines and release workflows, including automated builds, testing, security scanning, artifact management, deployment, rollback and environment promotion.
- Design and automate secure, repeatable cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, while supporting containerized and cloud-native deployment patterns across AWS environments.
- Own solutions across the full software delivery lifecycle, including technical design, implementation, infrastructure provisioning, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response and production support.
- Build and evolve resilient distributed systems using asynchronous messaging, event-driven architecture, caching, service-to-service communication and fault-tolerant design patterns.
- Strengthen platform reliability and observability through logging, metrics, dashboards, alerting, tracing, performance analysis, capacity planning, root-cause analysis and operational improvements.
- Partner across Engineering, Product, Architecture and Security to drive engineering quality through code and infrastructure reviews, secure development practices, automation, mentoring and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on software engineering experience building, deploying and supporting production backend applications and cloud-based systems.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot.
- Strong experience deploying and operating applications and infrastructure on AWS.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline or similar platforms.
- Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK or comparable technologies.
- Experience with containerization and cloud-native deployment using Docker and Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS or similar platforms.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including SQL development, schema design, migrations, indexing, query optimization and production support.
- Experience designing and developing REST APIs, microservices and distributed systems.
- Demonstrated experience with monitoring, logging, alerting, troubleshooting and production incident support.
- Ability to independently solve complex engineering and operational problems while balancing scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, cost and delivery needs.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions, dependencies, operational risks and trade-offs to technical and non-technical partners.
- Experience contributing to engineering quality through activities such as code reviews, infrastructure reviews, mentoring or technical knowledge sharing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Python, including automation, tooling, FastAPI or asynchronous service development.
- Experience with event-driven and distributed messaging technologies such as Apache Kafka, Amazon SQS, SNS, EventBridge or Redis.
- Experience operating Kubernetes or other container platforms, including deployment strategies, configuration, networking, autoscaling and workload troubleshooting.
- Experience with DevSecOps practices such as code scanning, dependency scanning, container scanning, secrets management, identity and access management and vulnerability remediation.
- Experience with modern observability and release engineering practices, including distributed tracing, service-level indicators, dashboards, blue/green or canary deployments, feature flags and automated rollback.
- Experience with performance engineering, capacity planning, load testing, cost optimization or the use of AI-assisted engineering tools to improve software delivery or operational workflows.
