Bloomberg Media empowers global business leaders with breaking news, expert opinion and proprietary data distributed with global reach. With over 30 million unique visitors each month, our flagship website bloomberg.com is the go-to destination for those looking to stay ahead of the curve. As one of the top 10 most visited financial and news sites on the web, we take pride in delivering top-quality content that our audience can trust.

The Media API Platform team builds and runs the API layer at the heart of Bloomberg Media's digital products. We empower Media engineers to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure APIs quickly. Our tools and standards make it easy to build, discover, and consume APIs across the org.

Our internal GraphQL gateway serves backend services and is composed of more than a dozen subgraphs, spanning user and media domains in one schema. And it's growing, soon aggregating dozens of data sources from product and content teams across the organization. Our public GraphQL gateway serves client-facing apps secured by pre-approved queries. We also operate the shared building blocks all our APIs rely on: centralized authentication and authorization, rate limiting, token management and job management.

We focus on reliability by building automated regression suites that run nightly and post-deployment, daily test reports, and observability tooling—including AI-assisted skills that track down latency regressions. The result is a team with wide impact: when engineers at Bloomberg Media need to build, find, or use an API quickly and safely, they use what we build. We are also excited about leveraging AI tooling to build, monitor, and release software, including agentic workflows for live features.

What’s in it for you?

  • High-Impact Scale: Own and scale the core API layer at Bloomberg Media, serving millions of users worldwide and handling up to 300k requests per minute.

  • Modern Tech Stack & Cutting-Edge Tools: Work with TypeScript/Node, Java/Kotlin, and AWS while pioneering AI-assisted tooling, agentic workflows, and a rapidly expanding GraphQL ecosystem using various open-source and in-house tools.

  • Ground-Floor Agentic Development: Get in on the ground floor of live agentic development workflows, pioneering AI-assisted tooling and agent-driven systems for cross-organization software development and feature delivery.

  • Graph Caching & High-Performance Scaling: Tackle complex federated GraphQL caching challenges by building fine-grained entity caching systems and optimizing response times to deliver high-throughput, low-latency performance for critical, high-traffic destinations across Bloomberg Media.

  • Ownership of Shared Building Blocks: Build and maintain critical shared infrastructure relied upon by engineers across the company, including API gateways, centralized authentication, rate limiting, and token management.

We'll trust you to:

  • Provide expert GraphQL guidance to client developer teams on best practices.

  • Grow our graph in a secure way for the future of possible agentic clients.

  • Develop and promote internal and open-source GraphQL tooling for seamless deployments and adoption of a well-governed federated graph.

  • Implement agentic workflows to ensure graph quality and speed of development.

  • Drive key initiatives like org-wide identity and access management (IAM) adoption, advanced observability, and upgraded job scheduling services for critical offline workflows.

  • Analyze open-source and vendor products to advise on buy vs. build decisions.

  • Partner closely with product and content teams across the organization, leading technical decisions, designing robust APIs, and mentoring engineers.

What we are looking for:

  • 5+ years of experience building and running backend services in production, including ownership of systems relied upon by other teams

  • Expertise in at least one of JavaScript/TypeScript (Node), Java, Kotlin, or Python

  • A solid grasp of distributed systems: service-to-service communication, caching, rate limiting, failure modes, and designing for reliability at scale

  • Real, current use of AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools in your own work

  • Experience debugging production issues at web scale. You are comfortable with HTTP, core networking concepts (DNS, TLS, proxies, load balancers), and observability tools (logs, metrics, traces) to identify the root cause of latency spikes or intermittent failures

  • Strong cross-team collaboration. You are happy to dig into another team's codebase, understand their domain, help them design their graph or API well, and build alignment

  • A habit of making things safer and easier for others: automated testing, CI/CD, clear standards and good documentation

  • Clear written and spoken communication, and a track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical decisions

Nice to have:

  • Hands-on GraphQL experience, especially with Apollo Federation, schema design, and subgraph development.

  • Experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)

  • Experience with authentication and authorization systems (OAuth, JWT, service identity/IAM)

  • Experience with AWS and container-based deployment

Questions you could be asked

  1. How do you decide when an AI agent can act on its own versus asking for approval first?
  2. Tell me about a project where api development was part of your work. What did you do?
  3. Tell me about a project where agentic workflows was part of your work. What did you do?
  4. Tell me about a project where observability was part of your work. What did you do?
  5. Tell me about a project where graphql federation was part of your work. What did you do?

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: AI agents, API Development, Agentic Workflows, Observability, and Graphql Federation. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
  • Put the AI tool in a bullet point about what you did, not just in a skills list. This role treats it as a required part of the job.
