AI in this role
Lead technical direction, build full-stack banking applications, and mentor engineers as a hands-on Staff Software Engineer.
- You're a hands-on, staff-level full-stack engineer who sets technical direction and still ships code
- We're the CommBiz Mobile & Insight crew, building the services and apps CommBank's business clients rely on
- Together we will build tomorrow's bank today, using world-leading technology and innovation
Do work that matters
Business Banking Technology builds and runs the platforms behind CommBank's business banking, from the products our customers use every day to the tools our people depend on. We use technology to make banking simpler for our customers. We treat software development as a craft and hold ourselves to industry best practice.
See yourself in our team
As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll be based in one of our squads and have influence across the whole CommBiz Mobile & Insight crew. The crew builds the native CommBiz apps for iOS and Android, along with the backend services, APIs and web frontends that serve our enterprise clients.
This is a full-stack role, so you'll need strong backend and web experience. If you've also built native iOS or Android apps, that's a real plus, and there's room for you to contribute to ours too.
A key part of the role is helping our native engineers grow across the stack, so more of the crew can deliver features end to end. You'll coach them as they take on web frontend and BFF work and shape the patterns and codebases that make it easy to pick up.
You will:
- Own the technical direction and roadmap for your areas, working with product and delivery leads to turn business goals into technical plans
- Partner with your engineering manager to define our engineering-led initiatives and workstreams that improve how we build and ship, including automation and tooling
- Stay hands-on, designing and building microservices, backend-for-frontend (BFF) services, REST APIs, data access layers, third-party integrations and React/Next.js frontends
- Lead complex initiatives across squads, from proof of concept through to production
- Set and raise engineering standards for testing, safe deployment, observability and security
- Grow engineers across squads through design reviews, pairing and mentoring, and share what you know through our guilds and internal writing
- Own what you ship in production by leading complex troubleshooting and joining our on-call roster
We're interested in hearing from people who:
- Have deep, hands-on full-stack experience shipping and running backend services and APIs (C# .NET or TypeScript/Node.js) and web frontends (React/Next.js or Angular) in production
- Have designed systems at enterprise scale, including service boundaries, API contracts, relational and NoSQL data models, integrations and event-driven architecture, and can explain the trade-offs clearly in writing
- Have led technical work across multiple teams, bringing engineers and stakeholders along and challenging them when it matters
- Own quality and reliability end to end: automated testing, CI/CD, safe releases, logging, monitoring and incident response
- Treat security as part of the design, not a final check
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, including those picking up a new part of the stack, and improve engineering practice beyond their own team
- Use AI-powered engineering tools (e.g. Claude, Copilot) effectively and help others do the same
- Native iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin) experience, experience with GraphQL and having built backends for mobile clients, including BFFs and APIs is all a bonus
Tech skills
We use a broad range of tools, languages and frameworks. We don't expect you to know them all, but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team:
- Data: MSSQL, Oracle, DocumentDB, Snowflake
- Messaging: Kafka and event-driven architecture
- Cloud and hosting: AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, CloudFormation
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus, AWS CodePipeline, Azure DevOps
- Observability: Observe, Splunk
- Testing: automated unit, integration and end-to-end testing
- AI-powered engineering: Claude, GitHub Copilot

- List these exact terms on your resume: Full Stack Development, Software Architecture, Mentoring, Microservices, and CI/CD. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
