Why MCP is in the news
On November 5, 2026, the guide "MCP Explained" reached 281 points on Hacker News. The guide is made by Runlayer. It describes MCP as an open standard for connecting AI apps to the tools and data they use.
It simplifies the picture into a host (the AI app), servers (small programs that expose tools, data or prompts) and the model. The MCP specification dated 2025-11-25 is the reference it follows.
There is a catch when you search. In the Google US results we pulled on November 6, 2026, ZipRecruiter says MCP stands for Microsoft Certified Professional. Other top results are a school careers page and a company profile. That is why a count based on AI postings is useful.
Which MCP jobs exist, and at what level?
Level lists 259 live jobs that mention MCP as of November 6, 2026. Of these, 113 are rated Builds AI, where the job is building AI systems. Another 130 are rated Works on AI, where the daily work is on AI products.
Only 16 of the 259 fall into Uses AI or Little AI. Across all 185,000+ open jobs, Builds AI makes up 4% of postings, according to the levels page. Among MCP roles it is 44%.
The query matches the word MCP anywhere in a posting, so the share of deep AI roles partly reflects that filter. Still, 220 of the 259 carry an MCP or MCP-servers tag in Level's tool list. Fifteen have MCP in the job title.
Who is hiring for MCP skills?
The largest employers in the 259 roles are Amazon with 11 and NVIDIA with 10. Thales, Thomson Reuters and Anthropic have 9 each. Etched has 8, Elastic has 7 and Singtel has 6.
Anthropic has three Forward Deployed Engineer roles and three Connectivity roles, including two Staff+ engineers and one manager. Thomson Reuters lists staff, principal and product positions. Elastic posts the same Senior Software Engineer integrations title seven times. Etched's eight roles are all Internal Acceleration positions.
Titles show what employers want built. Cloudflare hires for MCP Server Portals. Writer has a connectors and MCP engineer role. LSEG and Asana hire product managers for MCP integrations. Capital One hires a senior product manager for Google MCP and agent access.
What skills come with MCP?
Beyond the MCP tag, the tools most often listed on these roles are Python in 65 roles and Claude in 54. OpenAI appears in 32, Claude Code in 27 and LangChain in 26. LangGraph and Cursor each appear in 23 and 22.
